About Us

Our mission is to positively impact communities through sanitation solutions

We are a small start-up based in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Lake Tahoe. Our founder is a microbiologist who care greatly about impacts humans have on our environment. We have seen the impacts that recreation has had on our public lands and formed Humus as a way to address and lower our impacts on the ecosystems we love.

What is Humus?

Humus is the Latin word for earth, soil, or ground. It is the root word for humanity and humility. Scientifically, humus is the complex organic component of soil, formed by the  decomposition of leaves and other material by soil microorganisms. At Humus, we aim to combine the historical and scientific meanings of humus to create a business grounded in community and returning nutrients to the soil. We see human excrement as a resource that is wasted, not as waste. By accelerating and promoting the composting of waste in non-sewered toilets, Humus is trying to connect the gap to make sanitation a circular economy.
